Executive Director

On Monday, April 16, 2012 twenty AIA Chapter leaders and executive directors met with Robert Ivy, AIA Executive Vice President, at Gruen Associates in Los Angeles. With an introduction by Paul Welch, AIA CC Executive Vice President, Mr. Ivy explained that he is on a fact finding tour to see what issues are of paramount importance to our membership.
Presidents, board members and executive directors were invited from Santa Barbara, Ventura, Inland, California Desert, San Fernando Valley, Pasadena & Foothill, Los Angeles, Long Beach/South Bay, and Orange County. The issues raised were problem areas that are common among all our chapters. The basic message expressed was that AIA members don’t perceive value from National as much as they do from the local chapters they belong to.
The perceived value of AIA to the public is also less clearly defined today. The idea of the value of “AIA” has been diluted by LEED, NCARB, CASp, etc. The issue has been raised that the AIA is not doing enough for small practitioners verses large practitioners. The group was very united in the declaration of these issues as well as the strangle hold that NCARB has on our future practitioners.

The Chapter’s new website is a fresh start to the 2012 year, and will allow us to enhance our communication with AIA SFV members, other architects and allied professions in the industry, and the general public. Several features remain under construction (e.g. Find An Architect) as we continue to gather information and further develop these areas. We hope you enjoy the site’s new design and features.

Our home page features the winning entries of the 2011 Design Awards competition. This years Design Awards & Installation Banquet is featured in the Design Awards section of the website and includes the photographs of the event and the presentation Power Point file. The 2011 Installation & Design Awards Banquet was held on January 21, 2012 at The Castaway in Burbank, CA.

We thank our outgoing president, Arturo Yanez, AIA for his very successful leadership for 2011 and welcome our new president, Brad McDonald, AIA and the 2012 Board of Directors as they embark on a new year for the Chapter. You can learn more about our Board members by going to the About tab above.

We encourage your comments, suggestions for new content, and new applications that will benefit the Chapter via the website, the ‘Elevations’ newsletter, and electronic communication regularly sent to members and other construction industry professionals. Feel free to contact the Chapter office at edirector@aiasfv.org, or David Murray, website designer and Chapter Allied Board member with Earth Systems at (dmurray@earthsystems.com) with your comments.

“A Roundtable Discussion with Chet Widom, FAIA, State Architect“

AIA members receive 1.5 HSW/SUS CEUs

Join the AIA SFV for a unique opportunity to meet California’s new State Architect, Chet Widom, FAIA, appointed by Governor Jerry Brown in December 2011. Hear about what he intends to accomplish in his new position and about the first few months at DSA. While review boards and documentation slow down the design and construction process significantly, Widom faces the difficult challenge of speeding up the process with limited resources in a complicated bureaucracy.
The presentation will be a candid discussion on Chet’s journey from designer to State Architect and his goal of changing for the better how we practice architecture in California.
Topics will include:
• Chet’s commitment to improving the DSA and strengthening the values of design excellence statewide
• The opportunity to better align Federal ADA and California access regulations
• The opportunity for architects to help shape the next reiteration of the Cal‐Green Building Code
Chet Widom’s experience spans nearly fifty years as a practicing architect, with extensive experience in the design of a wide range of educational projects. He was a founding partner of WWCOT (now DLR Group), a 185-person architectural, interior design, planning and forensics firm with four offices in California and an office in Shanghai, China.
He served as the Senior Architectural Advisor for the Los Angeles Community College District’s $6.1 billion construction program. As a former President of both the National American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the AIA California Council, and Chancellor of the College of Fellows, Chet is recognized as an international leader in the profession.

In April 2012, NCARB will implement the final phase, which will include new experience categories, areas, and settings. Using the 2007 Practice Analysis of Architecture as a guide, the program requirements are being updated to more closely align with the current practice of architecture, to help ensure that interns acquire the comprehensive training that is essential for competent practice, and to make reporting experience fundamentally easier.

The changes to the program offer many benefits to interns by allowing them to complete some of the experience requirements during periods of unemployment, expanding program definitions, and simplifying the reporting process.

IDP 2.0 Timeline
Because the changes to the IDP offered several benefits to interns, NCARB decided to implement them as soon as system developments would allow. The first phase went into effect 1 July 2009, the second phase 1 January 2010, and the third is scheduled for April 2012. [Early 2012 NCARB will release IDP 2.0 Guidlines and IDP 2.0 Supervisor Guidelines that include the official rules for the new program.

3 April 2012
The electronic Experience Verification Reporting (e‐EVR) system will be shut down on April 3 and will be inaccessible as the data is converted to the IDP 2.0 format. No one will be able to submit reports during this downtime period. Experience submitted after this date will be in the IDP 2.0 format.

Seven work settings become experience settings A, O, and S.

Launch of new experience categories, areas, and core minimum hour requirement.

New electronic system to report IDP experience in My NCARB.

5 April 2012
New electronic system to report IDP experience available in My NCARB. Any reports submitted on April 5 will be submitted in the IDP 2.0 format.

Note: When Phase Three is implemented, all existing hours in the e‐EVR will be converted to IDP 2.0. All new experience reports will be submitted under the rules of IDP 2.0.

IDP 2.0 Experience Categories and Areas
The IDP overall experience requirement of 5,600 hours will remain the same; however, the experience categories and areas will be realigned to correspond with the findings of the 2007 Practice Analysis of Architecture.

IDP 2.0 Experience Settings
The current seven work settings will be replaced by three experience settings: A (Practice of Architecture), O (Other Work Settings), and S (Supplemental Experience).

Rollover to IDP 2.0
All experience will be rolled over to IDP 2.0. See how the rollover will work.

IDP Supervisors and Mentors
Both an IDP supervisor and an IDP mentor are crucial to the internship process. Learn how to keep interns on track and help them through the rollover to IDP 2.0.

IDP 2.0 Resources
NCARB has put together several resources to help interns through the rollover to IDP 2.0. Read articles in past editions of the Direct Connection and IDP e‐News, watch or listen to webcasts or podcasts from NCARB’s architects, or one of the other resources available.

The AIA SFV is pleased to announce the award of nine scholarships to Woodbury University School of Architecture students

AIA SFV Fund Awards 2011 Scholarships to Woodbury University Students

The AIA SFV is pleased to announce the award of three $1000 scholarships and six $500 scholarships to Woodbury University School of Architecture students this past month.

The Grand Critique, Woodbury’s annual awards program, was held on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at the New Woody’s Auditorium, the largest presentation venue on campus.

AIA SFV Fund Board members Michael Silva AIA and Russell Myers AIA were present to hand out the scholarship recognitions on behalf of the Chapter. Approximately 250‐275 students, professors, parents, and administration were in attendance, including the Dean of the Architectural School, Norman Millar; Chair of the Graduate Architectural Program, Ingalill Wahlroos‐Ritter; and Chair of the Undergraduate Architectural Program, Jeanine Centuori.

AIA SFV Fund scholarships are typically given in four distinct categories:

Architectural Student Selection Award,

Highest Student GPA Award,

Architectural Faculty Selection Award, and

The AIA SFV Fund Awards.

The selections for the Student Selection, Faculty Selection and Grade Point Average are made by Woodbury University architectural faculty and students. The AIA SFV Fund Award recipients are selected by AIA SFV jury members through the review of submitted architectural portfolios by students. Each of the three Grand Critique winners made a 15‐minute presentation about their work at the Grand Critique program. As part of its mission to serve our profession and our community, the Chapter continues to recognize and encourage architectural students in our community and at Woodbury University with the committed belief that architecture students will, as the future stewards of our built environments, be called on by society to take leadership roles as visionaries for sustainable design and the accommodation of social change.

This year, the AIA San Fernando Valley Chapter established a Foundation expressly to fund these scholarships and accept donations throughout the year from individuals, companies, corporations and any other sources in order to further the activities of the Fund program. The Chapter is committed to continuing a long term relationship with Woodbury University, which is the only accredited architectural school within the Chapter’s boundaries.

Please contact the Chapter Offices to learn how you can make a donation to the foundation

As an Institute we must provide the access to knowledge, research, and professional collaborations that are critical to ensure our members become more informed and better prepared to lead. The AIA continues to advance, disseminate, and advocate—to the profession, the building industry, the academy, and the public—design practices that integrate built and natural systems and enhance both the design quality and environmental performance of the built environment.

The AIA Committee on the Environment’s ”MEASURES OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN”

COTE definition of sustainability and sustainable design:

Sustainability envisions the enduring prosperity of all living things. Sustainable design seeks to create communities, buildings, and products that contribute to this vision.

Design & Innovation – Sustainable design is an inherent aspect of design excellence. Projects should express sustainable design concepts and intentions, and take advantage of innovative programming opportunities.

Regional/Community Design – Sustainable design values the unique cultural and natural character of a given region.

Land Use & Site Ecology – Sustainable design protects and benefits ecosystems, watersheds, and wildlife habitat in the presence of human development.

Bioclimatic Design – Sustainable design conserves resources and maximizes comfort through design adaptations to site-specific and regional climate conditions.

Light & Air – Sustainable design creates comfortable interior environments that provide daylight, views, and fresh air.

Water Cycle – Sustainable design conserves water and protects and improves water quality.

Energy Flows & Energy Future – Sustainable design conserves energy and resources and reduces the carbon footprint while improving building performance and comfort. Sustainable design anticipates future energy sources and needs.

Materials & Construction – Sustainable design includes the informed selection of materials and products to reduce product‐cycle environmental impacts, improve performance, and optimize occupant health and comfort.

Long Life, Loose Fit – Sustainable design seeks to enhance and increase ecological, social, and economic values over time.

Collective Wisdom and Feedback Loops – Sustainable design strategies and best practices evolve over time through documented performance and shared knowledge of lessons learned.

Walk the Walk with us!

The time for talk is over. Green design should be a reality for everyone in every region and every industry, starting today. That’s what our Walk the Walk campaign is all about.

Many are unaware that buildings and their construction count for nearly half of all greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumed in the U.S. each year. Globally, this percentage is even higher.

The American Institute of Architects is committed to the goal of reaching at least a 60 percent carbon emission reduction by 2010 and carbon neutral buildings by 2030. We can achieve that goal through the support of our architect members, who stand ready to provide invaluable counsel on re-claiming brownfields, renewing urban areas, and re-shaping the current landscape toward a more renewable future.

We invite you to join us on this journey toward a more sustainable future. Choose your pathway and learn. The next step is up to you.
