The Architecture of

Edward Durell Stone

Presented by Hicks Stone

Edward Durell Stone was an important architect of the 20th Century.

His career spanned the Beaux Arts era, the rise of modernism and he

historicizing late modernist work that ultimately became post-modernism.

He was an American architect born in rural Arkansas who became a

prominent international figure in architecture during the 1950’s and

1960’s. Early in his career he was a controversial and pioneering

exponent of European modernism, notably in his design for the

Museum of Modern Art in New York City and a series of stark, modern

homes. Later he would become a great commercial success,

celebrated on the cover of Time Magazine, for work like the Kennedy

Center in Washington D.C., but often derided by the critical press for

his critiques of the modernist aesthetic.

His practice was based in New York City, but most of his work was done

in the State of California.

The lecture will give an overview of Stone’s work and life, and give special

emphasis to the work that he did in California.

Hicks Stone, Edward Stone’s son and a practicing architect in New York City,

will give the lecture. Hicks Stone founded his firm, Stone Architecture, in 1991.

The firm specializes in single and multi-family residential work, and has been

commissioned to do work in locations as far ranging as California, Maine and

Florida. Prior to founding his firm, he worked in the offices of Philip Johnson

& John Burgee Architects in New York City. He obtained his Masters in

Architecture from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.

Hicks is currently in the process of writing a biography and critical analysis of

his father’s work in conjunction with California based author Robert Skolmen.
