AIA SFV Announces IDP Design Competition Winners
Sponsored by the
AIA San Fernando Valley Chapter and by Stock Building Supplies and Jeld-Wen Windows
“A Building for Affordable Housing”
The competition is to prepare the schematic design of a multifamily, affordable project.
Last month, the AIA San Fernando Valley Chapter proudly announced the winners of its first IDP Design Competition, which was open to all IDP candidates. Interest came from candidates all over the nation, creating 26 groups of entries (12 teams and 14 individuals). In the end, 12 submissions were received by the due date. First, second, third, and fourth place winners were selected by a design jury comprised of AIA SFV members.
The AIA SFV Design Competition emerged in response to the challenges associates and emerging professionals face in gaining hours towards their NCARB certification on the path to licensure. Leslie Nathan, AIA SFV Executive Director, had previously contacted NCARB inquiring about ways to be part of the solution. It became evident then that there were no programs available by which AIA chapters could help candidates earn the necessary hours required to fulfill IDP requirements. Through some research and approval by the NCARB, AIA SFV set up a competition to provide entrants with potentially 300 hours of CORE NCARB credits.
AIA National was more than supportive, commenting that the creative, responsive support program astounded them.
The competition, A Building for Affordable Housing, was open to all IDP candidates, with criteria and a program based on an actual site and affordable housing project that was an AIA SFV Design Award winner in 2011. First, second, and third place winners will each receive cash prizes.
Stock Building Supply and Jeld‐Wen, programs sponsors, developed a Webinar tailored for competition entrants, assisting them to understand the nuances of building component coordination.
The San Fernando Valley Chapter of the AIA would like to thank all entrants for their participation and congratulates the winners.
We acknowledge and thank Stock Building Supply and Jeld Wen for their support of this competition, and more importantly our profession as a whole.
